FIXED: Sage 50 Payroll cannot use this database at this time

After moving the Sage 50 Payroll data folder, you receive the error “Cannot use this database at this time. It may be locked by another user.”

Impact

Users of Sage 50 Payroll are unable to access the database on the new server.

Known Fixes / Solutions

• Close Sage Payroll application.
• Open File Explorer and navigate to C:\ProgramData\Sage\Payroll
• Rename three files:
  • PAY.USR
  • payroll.ini
  • payroll.usr
• Open Sage Payroll
• In the Startup Wizard, enter your Sage Account Number, Serial Number, and Activation Key. If you don’t have this information, you’ll need to contact Sage support.
• Complete the wizard and point to the new Sage Payroll database location when prompted.
